If you have bought a broad band package, yet suspect the supplier is not giving you anything near the stated maximum speed you are paying for, then this site is even accepted by Virgin Media (Telewest) as the most accurate, in a report whinging on about how inaccurate all the others are (except one other, forget who).

Thus when phoning up their tech helpline (free on 151 as a broadband user), you need not put up with any accusation that it is your equipment and method of measuring that is at fault.

To be fair, I was on a 10 MB package (so-called LARGE) and tested the speed when things ground to a halt, with several sites, and some were so far out that even I did not believe the results. No matter what site I used, even this one below, showed that the theoretical 10MB was in fact about 8MB average, peaking to 9.5 and dipping to 4 or 5 MB sometimes.

I find this is acceptable, as network congestion will slow the broadband down, so if you are on an 8MB package and are getting 6-7MB then there may not be anything that can be done in reality. What I am trying to suggest is that you will not get anywhere by ranting about Trading Standards, small claims courts, law suits, and "your rights" as it is common to have fluctuating speeds averaging a bit below the nominal speed.
I am now on a 20MB (XL broadband) for the first time today, and it only tested to 15Mbs and 730Kbps upload. Perhaps at that sort of discrepency I will check with them tomorrow if still 3/4 of what it should be, to see if there is a fault, which there often seems to be here around Whitchurch in Bristol!

Test your Internet connection speed at Speedtest.net

Even with only being 15Mbps approx, the difference to the internet surfing experience is so great that I am glad to have it at 15Mbps. If perchance you fancy joining the fast lane, I suggest the £56 a month TV, Broadband and Telephone, with free calls to 01,02 and 03 numbers. I used to pay £46 a month, now £57 (no ebilling for me so I lose £1 a month discount).

GRISOFT antivirus FREE. Very good.
Adaware spyware cleaner. Very good. Cleans when infected by spyware.
SpywareBlaster. Very good. Prevents spyware getting in. Use after cleaning with Adaware (above) and Spybot Search & Destroy (below).
Spybot search and destroy Does as it says, and removes what it finds.
Note that Spybot Search & Destroy has an Immunize feature that does a similar preventative function as SpywareBlaster, no harm having both running together!
STINGER from McAfee to seek out Trojans.
(Will get many, not guaranteed to get all, AVG from GRISOFT should get more.
Stinger is from McAfee, see their site here Scan your PC for viruses now!)

The next two do not think for you, they just show what you have got on your machine, so do not just delete everything that hijack.this shows, as much of it may be proper valid entries. That is where spybot is useful, it puts known good stuff in green for the browser hijack codes (like Google's toolbar, etc), for example. Even so, Spybot also requires that you know what you are doing when it asks if you want to delete cookies, or remove startup entries. If in doubt you can ask experts what may be suspect, from the hijack log or spybot report, (find a forum on security matters using the Google Search box below, to search for forums and other security links, etc.)

Useful to see how poor your security setup is, what critical updates are missing, etc.
